Each week, we focus on a different theme with our 4-year-old, in order to expose him to lots of fun educational topics. He’s a really big fan of the planets, so he was very excited when we spent a week learning about different aspects of our solar system. With the help of videos, books, and crafts, I can say I’m feeling pretty good about my knowledge of space! There was a lot to go over, since so much has changed – in terms of planet status – over the last decade or so. Dwarf planets, constellations, and asteroids – oh my!
Here are some of the educational YouTube VIDEOS we watched:
Here’s a few from one of our favorite YouTube channels, SciSchow Kids!
We also love the Kids Learning Tube channel on YouTube! Here’s a few from their library:
They also have a video for every single planet and dwarf planet, so make sure to check those out as well!
Here a list of the BOOKS we’ve read, along with links to find them on Amazon if you’d like to check them out as well:
Note: Some of these are not up to date on Pluto’s dwarf planet status. I think it’s taking a lot of us time to accept the fact that it’s no longer a planet, but a dwarf planet.
We also created our own Solar System CRAFT using a hangar, string, and some glow-in-the-dark planets! Here are some guides on how to create a few of your own crafts as well. Not pictured, but – I also recommend using chalk and play doh to create planet projects as well! They work on fine motor skills in addition to content knowledge.
