Many people come and go from Norfolk International Airport every single day. Though, not too many people know about this little gem hiding around the corner from the airport though, the Norfolk Airport Public Observation Area. If you love watching airplanes, or have a little one who does, this is the perfect place to go!

I found a secret, amazing place a few weeks ago that I have been dying to share with you. I personally love airports. I love to sit on benches in airports and people watch. My favorite date EVER was to the airport with my hubby. We got cheese sticks at the Burger King and sat on a bench and made up fun stories for each person that walked by – who they were, who they were visiting, where they were going.
Best. Date. Ever.
Well, a few weeks ago I had to pick up my mother-in-law from the Norfolk Airport and Maggie and I were incredibly early. I didn’t want to park and pay for parking so I wasn’t sure what I was going to do. So I thought maybe I would just drive around for a little bit and when I did, I found this little parking lot near the runway of the airport where you can park and watch airplanes.
It was just like that country song by Gary Allan, “Watching Airplanes.” Maggie and I just sat in the car and watched the airplanes drive by and then take off or land. It was so neat.
There is a gate up of course so you can’t get anywhere near the runway. And there really isn’t anywhere to sit or hang out, just in your car. But we just sat in the car and watched the airplanes go by. It was so nice.
It was so peaceful and fun. We will definitely be back soon.
The Address is:
5957 Robin Hood Rd
If you’re in Virginia Beach, the best way to get there is to head down Military Highway and turn right on Robin Hood Road. If you’re visual like me, check out these photos!
Of course, we had to check it out for ourselves! My son is 4 years old and he absolutely loved watching the planes take off and land. And I loved that it’s something completely free to entertain him! Here we are…
I highly recommend heading over to the Norfolk International Airport so you can spend some time “sittin’ out here watchin’ airplanes”! I also suggest, pulling up the Norfolk International Airport website on your phone so you can check the arrival and departure schedule. Having no planes to see would definitely put a damper on the trip!
